BACKGROUND
Play & Participation

Benefits of Learning Through Play

Since 1971, we have offered a stimulating preschool experience designed to develop self-esteem, independence, and social awareness in a play-centered environment.  We base our teaching philosophy on Jean Piaget’s theory of child development – young children are active learners and they need to manipulate and explore their world and then share their discoveries with friends and caring adults. At SSDS we provide the opportunity for these kinds of real life experiences, offering an atmosphere that allows children to learn at their own pace.

Parent Participation

At Silver Spring Day School the spirit of cooperation and community make it a special place for all. Parents who are actively involved also become part of the school’s strong surrounding community. Children benefit because parental involvement shows them that their school is valuable and important. A participatory school offers parents the opportunity to become personally engaged in their children’s education by helping in the classroom, determining the direction of the school, addressing issues of concern, and implementing change.

  • In-Classroom Participation SSDS offers parents the option to participate in their child’s classroom up to twelve times per school year.  It is the parents’ role to assist teachers throughout the day by reading books and helping with craft projects, outdoor games, circle time, and other class related tasks.  We offer full (12), half (6), quarter (3), and opt out (0) participation options. Parents who do not participate in the classroom are a welcome addition to our community and have other duties and responsibilities.  SSDS depends on all our parents to be committed to the growth and spirit of our school.
  • Parent Jobs All families, regardless of classroom participation status, are assigned one job for each child enrolled in the school.  Whether sharing a passion, a specific skill or just being a reliable member of the SSDS community, parents support the school and are a large part of what makes the SSDS community so unique.
