New Perspectives on Your Work

Silver Spring Day School Training Institute provides high quality training for early childhood educators. Workshops are led by dynamic, experienced instructors who combine theory and practice to give new perspectives on work with children. Every class offers techniques and materials that you can use immediately in your classroom or business.

Join us 30 minutes prior to each program for refreshments, conversation and networking. All workshops are approved as Core of Knowledge (CKO) training hours by the State of Maryland, OCC Approval #CKO-4862.

Basic Health and Safety – Fulfills new MSDE requirement

5 CKO hours in Health, Safety and Nutrition

Saturday, April 21, 2018 9 am – 2:30 pm


This workshop is required for all home daycare providers and childcare center staff, including directors, teachers and aides. Learn about basic safety guidelines for both indoor and outdoor areas.


Teaching Mindfulness Through Play 

3 CKO hours in Curriculum

Thursday, May 17, 2018, 6:00 – 9:00 pm   Cost: $48

Learn the many benefits of teaching mindfulness and self-calming skills to young children.   You’ll have the opportunity to practice hands-on, playful ways to integrate mindfulness into their days at school or daycare.


Determining the Meaning of Challenging Behavior: SEFEL Module 3a

6 CKO hours: 2 in Child Development, 3 in Professionalism and 1 in Community 

Monday, June 11, 2018, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm   Cost: $96

SEFEL Modules 1 and 2 describe ways to create positive relationships, arrange effective classroom environments, and teach social emotional skills in order to prevent challenging behavior.  This workshop, Module 3a, describes Positive Behavior Support, a way to address the needs of children whose challenging behaviors persist even with those preventative measures in place. Using case studies, learn to use observations and interviews to hypothesize the function of children’s challenging behavior and to begin to develop a behavior support plan.

6 CKO hours: 2 in Child Development, 3 in Professionalism and 1 in Community

Tuesday, June 12, 2018 9:00 am – 3:30 pm   Cost: $96

In this workshop, learn to identify skills that we can teach to replace children’s challenging behaviors.  Discuss appropriate responses to difficult situations.  Using case studies, practice developing complete behavior support plans for children with persistent challenging behavior.
