Ready to Play

The curriculum at SSDS is designed around themes that are of interest to young children — such as animals, outer space, seasons, things that go, families & friendship, nature, the 5 senses…or whatever a particular class may fancy!

Each themed-based unit includes:

  • Learning for small and gross motor skills
  • Social and emotional development
  • Cognitive development (activities in math, science, reading, social studies)
  • Dramatic play, art and music

Teachers take into consideration the interest of children with the understanding that each child is unique and learns at his or her own pace. We want SSDS students to leave here feeling confident, able to express feelings, and make friends.

Play is a child’s work. Purposeful play allows them to learn not only what they need to know in kindergarten, but many things that will allow them to become happy and healthy adults.

SSDS designs activities and events that are appropriate for each age group every day. The curriculum is accumulative and constructed to grow with each child.

Our daily programs provide:

  • A familiar rhythm of indoor play, circle time, snack time, outdoor activity and lunch time
  • Indoor play choices—blocks, puzzles, books, play dough, paints, dress-ups, sensory table play, crafts and cooking
  • Circle time features stories, songs, movement, finger plays
  • An opportunity to play outside on our nature based playground where children run, climb, swing, ride tricycles & scooters, dig for dinosaur bones, build sandcastles, and travel to faraway lands

**Snack & lunch are provided by the family during our Core Program. If you child stays for Little University, SSDS will provide a snack.**

Participation Fees: As a parent participatory school, SSDS welcomes all families to play an active role in caring for children alongside our educators.  With full respect for and recognition of the fact that some SSDS families may not take on this role, parents have the option to pay to cover the cost of supporting the classroom in lieu of committing to be in the classroom themselves.

A Day in the Life of a Parent Participant: Check out our short video here to be prepared for a successful day! **Parent participation shifts are only for the Core Program and do not include Enrichment hours.**

Programs
Specials

In addition to the enriching classroom experience, SSDS also offers a more intensive learning experience in art, music, yoga and social/emotional in a student’s regular class as part of the curriculum.  These special classes are offered monthly or bi-monthly and are taught by our very talented specials teachers, who visit the classes and introduce the students to more in-depth concepts or activities in their specialty.
