Daily Core Programs & Cultural Arts
Ready to Play

Play is a child’s work. Purposeful play allows them to learn not only what they need to know in kindergarten, but many things that will allow them to become happy and healthy adults — language, confidence, independence, problem solving, social skills, building relationships, executive functioning, self regulation and academic skills through hands on exploration!

The curriculum at SSDS is designed around themes that are of interest to young children — such as animals, outer space, seasonal changes, things that go, families & friendship, nature, the 5 senses…or whatever a particular class may fancy! Teachers take into consideration the interest of children with the understanding that each child is unique and learns at his or her own pace. We want SSDS students to leave here feeling confident, able to express feelings, and make friends.

Each themed-based unit includes:

  • Learning for small and gross motor skills
  • Social and emotional development
  • Cognitive development (activities in math, science, reading, social studies)
  • Dramatic play, art and music

Our daily programs provide:

  • A familiar rhythm of indoor play, circle time, snack time, outdoor activity and lunch time
  • Indoor play choices—some examples include blocks, puzzles, books, play dough, paints, dress-ups, kitchen, cars & trucks, sensory table play, crafts and cooking
  • Circle time featuring stories, songs, movement, finger plays
  • Outside play on our nature based playground where children have the opportunity to:
    • run freely
    • climb on the climbing wall or in our climbing tree
    • swing on our large wooden swing or monkey bars
    • ride tricycles & scooters around the path
    • dig in the dirt for worms
    • build creations in our sandbox
    • “cook” in our large wooden kitchen
    • perform on the stage
    • explore our fairy garden
    • travel to faraway lands on our dragon or in our boat

(each class gets at least an hour of outdoor time, often times more)

**Snack & lunch are provided by the family during our Core Program. If you child stays for Little University, SSDS will provide a snack.**

Specials

In addition to the enriching classroom experience, SSDS also offers a more intensive learning experience in art, music, yoga and social/emotional in a student’s regular class as part of the curriculum.  These special classes are offered monthly or bi-monthly and are taught by our very talented specials teachers, who visit the classes and introduce the students to more in-depth concepts or activities in their specialty.
