Daily Programs
Ready to Play

The curriculum at SSDS is designed around themes that are of interest to young children, such as nursery rhymes, animals, dinosaurs, and seasons.

Each themed-based unit includes:

  • Learning for small and gross motor skills
  • Social and emotional development
  • Cognitive development (activities in math, science, reading, social studies)
  • Dramatic play, art and music

Teachers take into consideration the interest of children with the understanding that each child is unique and learns at his or her own pace.  We want SSDS students to leave here feeling confident, able to express feelings, and make friends.

Play is a child’s work.  Playing allows them to learn not only what they need to know in kindergarten, but many things that will allow them to become happy and healthy adults.

SSDS designs activities and events that are appropriate for each age group every day. The curriculum is accumulative and constructed to grow with each child.

Our daily programs provide

  • A familiar rhythm of indoor play, circle time, snacks, and outdoor activity
  • Indoor play choices—blocks, puzzles, play dough, paints, dress-ups, water and sand play, crafts and cooking
  • Circle time features stories, songs, finger plays
  • Out of doors children climb, swing, ride tricycles & scooters, dig for dinosaur bones, create fairy dust and build sandcastles

Silver Spring Day School provides students and parents a variety of enriching opportunities that extend beyond the school day. These opportunities include:

SSDS Days

Each year, SSDS holds school-wide “SSDS Days.” SSDS Days are scheduled on two different days so that all the children can participate. SSDS days may include the following: Halloween celebrations, Pizza & Pajama Day, St. Patrick’s Day Hunt, Earth Day, Mother’s Day celebration, and Father’s Day celebration.

  • Halloween Celebrations, October

In-House Field Trips

Every year SSDS plans several in-house field trips for the children to enjoy. These field trips include a Truck Touch, performances by musicians and storytellers, hands-on experiences with reptiles and insects, and more.

By Parents For Parents

Many times parents organize things that make life at SSDS just a little easier. Such parent driven activities include: playgroups for siblings, babysitting swaps, summer get-togethers and more.

More

Classroom teachers, with the help of parents in the class, organize other in-house field trips as well as field trips outside the school throughout the year.  These trips may include: pumpkin picking, bread-making, dining at a Chinese restaurant, exploring at Brookside Gardens  and much more. Field trips outside the school are only offered in the pre-K classes.
